ABOUT

CONFESSION.
I ALMOST FAILED CERAMICS AT COLLEGE.

It’s true. I barely survived that ceramics semester at The College of Fine Arts.

It was my second or third year of my design degree and I dived right into that semester of ceramics determined to explore forms, learn the art of slip-casting and come out as a ceramic-conquerer-of-sorts. I was making these wave-like forms around the concept of ‘swimming through water’. They were hand built pieces. Simple fluid forms, circular-bendy-wavy and imagined to be worn around the arms, like oversize sculptural jewellery pieces, to reflect the movement of water.

It was a disaster. My porcelain pieces didn’t survive the first firing. They were more
bendy-breakages then fluid forms. The weeks of making, turned into dust-damage.

I quickly left that ceramics semester behind, never ever wanting to revisit that rollercoaster ever again.

Fast forward a few decades and ceramics has become the calm to my need to conquer. It was the exact thing
I needed in a post-covid-world.

It calms by center.

It curbs by perfectionism.

It has taught me to embrace the failures and celebrate all the small wins. Accept that the control is out of my hands and to be friends with the kiln-gods, who often know better than most anyways.

Ceramics is my happy place. I make for joy, I make what I love.

And I hope you love each piece as much as I do.
